Is Wonder a true story Auggie? ›

Wonder is not based on a true story, but is inspired by multiple real-life events. The 2017 film was based on R.J. Palacio's 2012 novel and deals with Treacher Collins syndrome. The author's personal experience and a song from 1995 inspired the creation of the book and subsequent film.

The movie ends with everyone cheering Auggie as he delivers a voiceover narration (quoting the last precept Mr. Browne gave in class): "Be kind, for everyone is fighting a hard battle. And if you really want to see what people are, all you have to do is look."

Wonder isn't recommended for children under eight.

On her website, author R.J. Palacio concedes that – if pushed – she would identify Auggie's dominant anomaly as Treacher-Collins syndrome, with a cleft lip/palate, and numerous “medical mysteries” as described in the book.
